“Am I Doing What God Wants or Am I Doing Too Much?”

Launching a new business, presenting a new idea or making a life transition is scary and when we prepare to do scary things we have a tendency to try to be perfect out of fear of failure and judgement. We doubt our decisions to do it one way or another bc we are worried about the outcome. We look at others, question what they’re doing and compare. We obsess over every small detail and to what end? Often times this kind of action leads to no end rather we end up in jealous, resentful and perpetually distracted by being so particular that we never actually finish or get started.

In Luke Chapter 10 verses 38-41 Jesus and the disciples stop to visit with Mary and Martha. Once inside, Jesus begins to teach. As He’s teaching Mary sits at Jesus’ feet and listens. Meanwhile Martha is distracted with the preparation of a big, elaborate dinner that nobody asked her to make. At some point in the night Martha comes to Jesus and says, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” Jesus replies,

“My dear Martha, you are worried and upset about all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away.”

Can you imagine what Martha did next? Maybe she returned to the kitchen begrudgingly and tried to finish her elaborate dinner or maybe she went to the kitchen, cut off all the pots and pans, grabbed her guests a granola bar and joined Martha at Jesus’ feet. Regardless of what Martha did next, the only right thing to do is whatever allowed her to be in the presence of the Lord most quickly.

So, let’s apply this in really life?

  1. In what areas of your life are you, like Martha, unnecessarily overdoing or overthinking an assignment?

  2. In what ways is this exaggeration keeping you from time that you could be spending in the presence of the Lord, or with friends and family or resting or moving on to your next Godly assignment?

  3. How might your actions be causing a disturbance or distraction for others?

  4. And, mostly importantly, now that you know all of this, what are you going to do next?
